In today's environment of privacy regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation of the European Union, Whois privacy has become the default on practically all domain registrations. There is one exception: .us.

The Registry states that:

The usTLD is committed to maintaining the security of its top-level domain and ensuring that the information included in the authoritative database is reliable, accurate, and up-to date. One of the mechanisms to ensure the integrity of the .us namespace is the collection of true registrant information. The usTLD Registry uses an algorithm to detect the unintentional or purposeful registration of proxy, anonymous, and/or private domain name registrations, and it holds registrars accountable for not providing these services to them.
